About macOS virtual machines and Intelligent Infrastructure

macOS virtual machines (VMs) are not available in Indiana University's Intelligent Infrastructure service.

Since Apple discontinued its Xserve line, Apple's consumer hardware is the only option. Offering a macOS VM in these circumstances would require purchasing additional VMware and Apple licenses, as well as further management and training costs, while the demand for macOS as a VM service has been relatively low.

To provide the widest service for the largest population at the lowest price, the II service depends on standardized hardware for the compute hosts. Without viable enterprise hardware from Apple, offering Mac virtualization is not feasible at this time.
