ARCHIVED: In Pine, how do I automatically save a copy of messages I send?

Note: Pine is not available on any central UITS systems. UITS does not support the use of Pine at Indiana University.

Note: The software discussed here is no longer in common use at IU, and UITS may no longer be able to verify this text's accuracy; additionally, the UITS Support Center may no longer have the materials needed to adequately support this software.

By default, Pine saves a copy of the messages you send in a folder named sent-mail. This option is controlled by the "default-fcc" setting, which has the option of saving copies to a different folder or not at all. You can check or change the current setting of "default-fcc" using Pine's configuration utility.

At Pine's Main Menu, press  s  for Setup, and then  c  for Config. Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the line that starts with "default-fcc". How you change this setting depends on its current value. Follow the appropriate instructions below:

  • If copies of messages you send are saved in the default folder, sent-mail, you will see: default-fcc = <No Value Set: using "sent-mail">

To change this setting, press  c  for Change, and then enter the name of a folder in which to save copies (or enter  ""  [two double quotes] to turn off saving copies).

  • If copies of messages you send are being saved to a different folder, you will see: default-fcc = folder-name

Above, folder-name is the name of the folder where copies are being saved. To change this setting, press  c  for Change, and then enter the name of a folder in which to save copies (or enter  ""  [two double quotes] to turn off saving copies). To return to the default setting (saving copies to the sent-mail folder), press  d  to delete the current setting.

  • If copies of messages you send are not being saved, you will see: default-fcc = ""

To change this setting, press  c  for Change, and then enter the name of a folder in which to save copies. To return to the default setting (saving copies to the sent-mail folder), press  d  to delete the current setting.

When you are done, press  e  to exit the Setup Configuration menu. When prompted, press  y  to save your changes.
