ARCHIVED: In Mac OS, how do I install fonts?

Note: For information on how to install fonts in Mac OS X, see In Mac OS X, how do I install fonts?

For Mac OS 7.1 through 9.x, drag the fonts you want to install on top of the closed System Folder. The system automatically installs them in a folder named Fonts. You can install fonts at any time without restarting your computer, but they will not be available to running applications, including the Finder, until the applications are closed and opened again.

For System 7.0.x, close all applications and drag the fonts on top of the System file located in the System Folder. To be sure all applications are closed, you can restart with the extensions off. For help disabling extensions, see ARCHIVED: In Mac OS, how do I restart my computer with extensions off, and why would I want to?

Note: System 7.0.x does not use font suitcases. If your font files are in suitcases, you must open the suitcase file (shaped like a suitcase with a handle on top) and drag the individual font files onto the System file.

For System 6.0.8 and all earlier versions, you must use an application called Font/DA Mover:

  1. To open Font/DA Mover, double-click its icon.

  2. Click Open below the empty window on the right.

  3. Open the font file that you want to install.

  4. Select all the sizes of the font in the window by pressing Cmd-a .

  5. Click Copy to copy the selected fonts to the System file.

  6. Click Close below the window on the right.

  7. If you want to install additional fonts, click Open again and repeat the procedure. Click Quit to close the program.
