In Unix, can I use the whois command if I'm not sure of a server name?

If you would like to use the Unix whois command, but do not know of an appropriate server, you can get a list of servers from Indiana University. At the Unix shell prompt, enter:

whois -h whois.indiana.edu whois-servers

The information in this database is updated every 24 hours.

Note: You can no longer use whois to find information about computer users at Indiana University. You can search the IU Address Book for IU email addresses.

Visit the IU Address Book at:

At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see At IU, how do I get support for Linux or Unix?
