ARCHIVED: In Emacs, how do I read about a specific topic in the online manual?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

When you are referred to a specific topic in the Emacs online manual, you can read this manual node (assuming nothing is broken) by typing this sequence of keystrokes:

  C-h i m emacs RET m topicname RET

Replace topicname with the topic to which you were referred. If you aren't sure how to enter this command in Emacs, see How keystrokes are denoted in Emacs

This command invokes the Info utility. If you don't already know how to use Info, press ? from within Info.

If you're referred to a specific subtopic (often written as "topicname:subtopic"), type this sequence of keystrokes and commands:

  C-h i m emacs RET m topicname RET m subtopicname RET

Replace topicname with the appropriate topic and subtopicname with the appropriate subtopic.

Note: Your system administrator may not have installed the Info files, or may have installed them improperly. If you have problems, you should report them to your system administrator.

This information comes from the Emacs FAQ.
