In Emacs, how do I edit a file with a $ in its name?

In Emacs, you must take care when editing a file with a $ in its name. When you enter a filename in the minibuffer, Emacs will attempt to expand a $ followed by a word as an environment variable. To suppress this behavior, enter $$ instead.

This information comes from the Emacs FAQ.
