ARCHIVED: In Mac OS, what software can I use to read Usenet newsgroups?
Note: This information does not apply to Mac OS X. For information about newsreading software for Mac OS X, see ARCHIVED: In Mac OS X, what software can I use to read Usenet newsgroups?
Several Usenet newsreaders are available for Mac OS. They are available from most Mac OS software archives; for more information, see For Mac OS X, where can I download freeware, shareware, commercial software, and software updates? The following applications are among the better newsreading clients for Mac OS 9 and earlier:
MT-NewsWatcher
A variant of NewsWatcher, an early Mac newsreader, MT-NewsWatcher is developed by Simon Fraser. It has several advances over the original, including the ability to execute several newsreader tasks concurrently. You can find it at the MT-NewsWatcher web site.
Thoth
Developed by Brian Clark, Thoth is the shareware cousin of Yet Another NewsWatcher. It has an enhanced feature set, including multithreading, better integration for multiple news servers, and support for non-English languages and non-Latin alphabets.
MacSOUP
MacSOUP, developed by Stefan Kurth, was designed primarily to be used offline, which means that you download the news articles you want for later reading. It is full featured and available in several different languages. It is $20 shareware and is available at the MacSOUP web site.
Hogwasher
Hogwasher, developed by Asar Corporation, works as both an offline and online newsreader. It has a broad feature set and can also serve as a POP mail client.
Netscape and Mozilla
Though Netscape and Mozilla may not have feature sets as extensive as some of the dedicated Usenet clients, they do offer support for multiple news servers and have the convenience of an all-in-one package. Both Netscape and Mozilla are now being developed for Mac OS X only, but earlier versions for Mac OS 9 are still available for download. Netscape is available from the Netscape web site.
Mozilla is available from the Mozilla web site. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the Mac OS 9 section.
Microsoft Outlook Express and Entourage
Outlook Express is a POP mail, IMAP, and Usenet client intended for use in conjunction with Internet Explorer. It doesn't have an extensive feature set, but does support multiple news servers. For more information, see the Mactopia web site.
Entourage is similar to Outlook Express, but has added functionality as a personal information manager. As a newsreader, it is functionally identical to Outlook Express. It is a component of Microsoft Office 2001 and later.
