At IUB, what should I do if I'm having problems using my modem with my office telephone?
At Indiana University Bloomington, if your communications software seems to talk to your modem and even tries to dial (via Telix, ProComm, pcAnywhere, etc.) but doesn't connect, try a separate nonbusiness set line to test it. The typical error while the modem tries and tries again to get a usable connection is "No Dial-Tone".
If the line to which you wish to connect is a business set (smart phone) line, a modem or answering machine will most likely not function at that jack, even though the business set does and you know the device in question is good.
UITS Support Center Telephone Services offers two solutions. First, you can get a separate line that is not a business set line. For more, see At IU, how do faculty and staff request telephone service in an office?
Second, you can get a business set adapter that will allow you to
connect your modem to the existing business set telephone line. For
more, contact UITS Support Center Telephone Services at 812-856-2287,
or by email at commreq@iu.edu .
