In Unix, how often are the /tmp and /scr directories purged (erased)?
On many Unix systems, the /tmp directory is
purged each time the computer is rebooted, or whenever the system
administrator feels it is necessary (i.e., when it becomes full). Many
systems that have a /scr directory will have a policy
dictating how frequently files are removed. Check with your system
administrator for information about your system's policy.
For information about scratch space on Indiana University's research systems, see At IU, how much disk space is available to me on the research systems?
Note: In cases where the file system becomes full,
more recently accessed files in the /scr directory may be
purged to create room.
While anyone can create and use files in the /tmp
directory, your /scr/username directory is
yours, and cannot be viewed by other users unless you
specify otherwise.
At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see At IU, how do I get support for Linux or Unix?
