In Unix, how can I see a brief summary of my mail?

Note: Mail service is not available on any of the UITS central Unix systems at Indiana University.

You can list your mail messages on a Unix computer, one per line, without entering a mail program (like Berkeley mail) by using the from command. To use this command, at the Unix prompt, enter:

from

The from command produces output like this:

From bwinkle@indiana.edu Mon Mar 26 13:48:34 2001 From TAZ@harmony.ucs.indiana.edu Wed Mar 28 13:02:30 2001 From fhleghorn@uunet.net Tue Apr 3 13:44:49 EST 2001 From bbunny@wbros.com Tue Apr 10 13:47:24 EST 2001

As you can see, the address is followed by the date and time.

To find out more about how to use this command, at the Unix prompt, enter the following:

man from

At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see At IU, how do I get support for Linux or Unix?
