In Maple, how can I perform an operation on the elements of a matrix?

Maple does not evaluate a vector or matrix automatically. You must explicitly command that these objects be evaluated, using evalm and map, for example:

> with(linalg): > M:=matrix([[x,y],[-y,x]]); [x y] M := [ ] [-y x] > M; M > evalm(M); [x y] [ ] [-y x] > subs(x=2, y=3, evalm(M)); [ 2 3] [ ] [-3 2] > evalm(M &* M); [ 2 2 ] [x - y 2 x y ] [ ] [ 2 2] [-2 x y x - y ] > map(diff, %, x); [2 x 2 y] [ ] [-2 y 2 x] > expM := exponential(M, t); [exp(t x) cos(t y) exp(t x) sin(t y)] expM := [ ] [-exp(t x) sin(t y) exp(t x) cos(t y)] > subs(t=0, evalm(expM)); [exp(0) cos(0) exp(0) sin(0)] [ ] [-exp(0) sin(0) exp(0) cos(0)] > simplify(%); [1 0] [ ] [0 1]
