In Windows, how do I set a printer to print on both sides of a page by default?
Note: These instructions work when using printer drivers written by Microsoft; however, some manufacturer printer drivers modify the windows mentioned, and the duplex settings may be in different places. If you use a manufacturer's driver and know that your printer supports duplex printing, yet do not see a "Print on Both Sides" option, refer to the manufacturer's documentation.
Printing on both sides of a page is called duplex printing. To set a duplex-capable printer to print on both sides of a page by default:
Windows 7 or Vista
- From the
Startmenu, selectControl Panel.
- In Windows 7, open
Devices and Printers; in Vista, openPrinters.
- Right-click the printer and choose
Printing preferences....
- Check
Print on both sides.
Windows XP
- Log into your workstation with administrative privileges.
Note: At Indiana University, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see What is the principle of least privilege?
- Click
Start, and then selectPrinters and Faxes.Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to About navigation settings in Windows.
- Right-click the icon for your default printer and select
Properties.
- In the
Generaltab, clickPrinting Preferences....
- In the
Layouttab, selectFlip on Long EdgeorFlip on Short Edge, depending on your settings.
- Click
OK.
