ARCHIVED: When installing the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 3.x, why do I receive an error message that setup has been interrupted?

When installing the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 3.x, you may receive the following error message:
"Microsoft Exchange setup was interrupted before your new software was fully installed. You can run Microsoft Exchange Setup in its entirety at a later time to complete the installation."
Exchange setup has trouble installing the Exchange client
on a Windows 3.x computer where GroupWise has already been
installed. GroupWise installs a file (MAPI.DLL) that
Exchange setup does not overwrite. This causes setup to fail. To fix this problem, follow
these steps:
- Before running the Exchange installation setup, rename the file
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAPI.DLLto\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\GWMAPI.DLL.
- Now start Exchange setup and the process should complete normally.
Note: This does not affect the GroupWise installation
on your computer. However, now when you choose Send from
the File menu in a program, Exchange will be used instead of
GroupWise.
