ARCHIVED: From the Shakespeare or Jewel systems, how do I forward my mail to a different email system?

Note: UITS is replacing the Shakespeare and Jewel systems with a new email environment called Cyrus mail. For information about the new system, see the Knowledge Base document What is Cyrus mail? On the new system, you can access your mail via IU Webmail or a desktop client, but not via Pine. For more information about your email options, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: If I used Pine on the Shakespeare or Jewel systems, what do I need to know about the recent email upgrade?

Note: IU Webmail is an email client that you can use to read your Shakespeare or Jewel account email. As such, it is independent of your Shakespeare or Jewel mailbox. Consequently, you cannot, nor do you need to, forward mail from your Shakespeare or Jewel account to IU Webmail; IU Webmail reads the mail in your Shakespeare or Jewel account.

At Indiana University, to forward all new mail from your Shakespeare or Jewel systems account to another account (e.g., an Exchange account, another Indiana University Unix account), follow the steps below:

  1. In Pine, from the Main Menu, press  !  (the exclamation point) to exit to the Unix shell.

  2. At the Unix prompt, enter forward on .

  3. The following question will appear: "Do you want to save a copy of forwarded mail? [yes/no]". Entering yes will retain a copy of all received mail messages on your Shakespeare or Jewel systems account, while also forwarding them to the address you specify in the next step. Entering no will forward the mail without retaining a copy on your Shakespeare or Jewel systems account.

Note: If you keep a copy of your messages on your Shakespeare or Jewel account, be sure to clean out your Shakespeare or Jewel account regularly so that it does not go over quota. For more information about quotas, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: On the Shakespeare and Jewel systems, what are IMAP and local quotas?

  4. The system will prompt you to "Enter the email address to which you want incoming mail forwarded". In the blank line that follows, enter your preferred email address.

  5. To return to Pine, at the Unix prompt, enter exit .

Consolidating your email

UITS recommends that you forward the email on all your accounts except your preferred email account to  username@indiana.edu  (at IU Bloomington) or  username@iupui.edu  (at IUPUI), replacing username with your username. Then use the Account Management Service (AMS) to direct all mail to your preferred address. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document At IU, how do I choose my primary email address and preferred email account?

Note: If you have an Exchange account, use the Inbox Assistant or Rules Wizard in Outlook to forward your Exchange mail to your preferred address. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document In Microsoft Outlook for Windows, or in Outlook Web App (OWA), how do I automatically forward all of my IU email to another address?

Testing mail forwarding

To list your current forwarding information for your Shakespeare or Jewel account, at the Unix prompt, enter forward list .

You can test to make sure that your mail is properly forwarding by sending a message to  username@node.ucs.indiana.edu  (at IUB) or  username@node.iupui.edu  (at IUPUI). Replace username with your username and node with your Shakespeare systems node (i.e., Ariel, Iago, Kate, or Lear) or your Jewel systems node (i.e., Jade or Pearl). Then verify that the message arrived at the preferred address rather than on your Shakespeare or Jewel systems account.

Warning: Whenever you change your mail forwarding, it is wise to log into each of your accounts and verify that all accounts are forwarded to the same preferred address. If they are not, you may create an endless mail loop resulting in lost mail. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document At IU, how can I tell if my mail is forwarded?

Turning off mail forwarding

To stop forwarding mail, at the Unix prompt, enter forward off .
