Many of the Windows system files are hidden by default. To view these files, follow the instructions for your version of Windows:

Windows 8

  1. In File Explorer, open a new window. (If your keyboard has a Windows logo key, press Win-e.)
  2. From the View tab, click Options.
  3. From the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

When you open any folder on your hard drive, you will now see all of the files, including the hidden ones.

Windows 7, Vista, or XP

  1. From the desktop or the Start menu, select Computer in Windows 7 or Vista, or My Computer in Windows XP.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options.

Note: In Windows 7 or Vista, the Tools menu may not be visible; press the Alt key to display the menu bar.

  3. Click the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

When you open any folder on your hard drive, you will now see all of the files, including the hidden ones.
