ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I view hidden files?
Many of the Windows system files are hidden by default. To view these files, follow the instructions for your version of Windows:
Windows 8
- In File Explorer, open a new window. (If your keyboard has a
Windows logo key, press
Win-e.)
- From the
Viewtab, clickOptions.
- From the
Viewtab, selectShow hidden files and folders, and then clickOK.
When you open any folder on your hard drive, you will now see all of the files, including the hidden ones.
Windows 7, Vista, or XP
- From the desktop or the
Startmenu, selectComputerin Windows 7 or Vista, orMy Computerin Windows XP.
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectFolder Options.Note: In Windows 7 or Vista, the
Toolsmenu may not be visible; press theAltkey to display the menu bar. - Click the
Viewtab, selectShow hidden files and folders, and then clickOK.
