In Windows 2000, XP, or 2003, how do I change a file's read-only permission?

Before making changes to some system files (boot.ini, for example), you must remove the read-only permissions associated with them:

  1. Locate the file; see In Windows, how do I locate a file if I know its name or its contents?

  2. Right-click the filename and select Properties.

  3. At the bottom of the Properties window, deselect Read-only, and then click OK.

  4. Find the file again, and then double-click the file to open it. You can now make and save changes to the file.

Note: To ensure that the file is not accidentally overwritten, change the file back to read-only when you are finished making changes.
