In Windows, how do I decompress a .gz file?
In Windows, to decompress a file ending with the .gz
extension, you need to get file decompression software. Microsoft
recommends some compression utilities that will work with
.gz files at the
Windows File Association page.
Among the utilities available, WinAce, StuffIt, PowerArchiver, WinRAR, and WinZip claim
to support the decompression of .gz or Gzip files.
A variety of file decompression software is also available at CNET.
UITS has tested and recommends 7-zip, available for free from IUware Online for Indiana University students, faculty, and staff. UITS does not attest to the suitability, compatibility, stability, or usability of other programs.
