ARCHIVED: In Microsoft Word, how do I stop the automatic insertion of numbers and bullets?

To stop Word from automatically inserting numbers and bullets:

Word 2010 and 2007

  1. In Word 2010, from the File menu, select Options.

    In Word 2007, from the Office Button menu, select Word Options.

  2. Click Proofing.
  3. Click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  4. Under "Apply as you type", deselect Automatic bulleted lists and Automatic numbered lists.

Earlier Word versions

  1. From the Tools menu, select AutoCorrect... or AutoCorrect Options....
  2. Click the AutoFormat As You Type or AutoFormat tab.
  3. In the "Apply as you type" section, deselect Automatic bulleted lists and Automatic numbered lists. Click OK.
