In SPSS for Windows, how can I read a SAS data file?

In SPSS 11.0 and later, you can read SAS data files with the GET SAS command. The following command reads the SAS data file test.sas7bdat into SPSS:

GET SAS DATA='test.sas7bdat'.

You may also point and click using the SPSS menus. From the File menu, click Open, and then Data. In the dialog box, choose the appropriate file type and SAS file to open.

Note: SAS data files may have various extensions, such as .sas7bdat for version 8.xx or later, .sd2 for version 6.xx (Windows), and .ssd01 for Unix.

To save the file as an SPSS data file, type:

SAVE OUTFILE='test.sav'.

Note: To translate files between SAS and SPSS, you may use Stat/Transfer, a Windows application available in Windows Student Technology Centers (STCs) at Indiana University Bloomington. To find a lab with Windows machines, see the STC's Lab Information Organized by Building.

For more about statistical and mathematical software, email the UITS Stat/Math Center, visit the center's web page, or phone 812-855-4724 (IUB) or 317-278-4740 (IUPUI). The center is located in Bloomington at 410 N. Park Avenue, and is open for consultation by appointment Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
