ARCHIVED: In Mac OS, how do I change the monitor resolution and color depth?

You can change the monitor resolution and color bit depth in Mac OS through either the control panels or the Control Strip.

Changing your monitor resolution

With the Monitors (Mac OS 9.x) or Monitors & Sound control panel

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then Monitors or Monitors & Sound.

  2. If it isn't already selected (grayed out), click the Monitor button, which looks like a sun.

  3. In the "Resolution" section, select the resolution you prefer.

With the Monitors control panel (old version)

Note: The original Monitors control panel was largely replaced by the Monitors & Sound control panel, and then, in Mac OS 9, by a rewritten Monitors control panel.

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then Monitors.

  2. Click Options... .

  3. Under "Select a monitor setting", click the resolution you prefer and click OK.

With the Control Strip

  1. Open the Control Strip, and click the Monitor Resolution module, which looks like a monitor with a checkerboard pattern.

  2. Select the resolution you prefer.

Changing the color bit depth

With the Monitors (Mac OS 9.x) or Monitors & Sound control panel

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then Monitors & Sound.

  2. If it isn't already selected (grayed out), click the Monitor button, which looks like a sun.

  3. In the "Color Depth" section, select either a color or gray-scale display, and how many colors or shades of gray to use.

With the Monitors control panel (old version)

Note: The original Monitors control panel was largely replaced by the Monitors & Sound control panel, and then, in Mac OS 9, by a rewritten Monitors control panel.

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then Monitors.

  2. Under "Settings of selected monitor:", select either a color or gray-scale display, and how many colors or shades of gray to use.

With the Control Strip

  1. Open the Control Strip and click the Monitor BitDepth module, which looks like a monitor with vertical bars.

  2. Select the number of colors or shades of gray you want the monitor to display.
