In Pine, how do I automatically append my signature to mail messages?

Note: Pine is not available on any central UITS systems. UITS does not support the use of Pine at Indiana University.

Note: The software discussed here is no longer in common use at Indiana University, and UITS may no longer be able to verify the document's accuracy. The UITS Support Center may no longer have the manuals and other materials required to support this software adequately.

In Pine 3.92 and later, you can use an editor to create and modify your signature. To set up your signature:

  1. From the Main Menu in Pine, press  s  for Setup menu and then  s  again for Signature.

  2. By default, the signature editor uses Pico; using it is similar to using Pine's message composer. Edit the signature to look exactly as you would like it to appear in your email.

  3. To save your changes and exit, press Ctrl-x . Depending on your configuration and Pine version, Pine will either save your signature into its configuration or into a file called .signature. Every time you compose a message, Pine will append your signature to it.

If your signature is not appearing in your messages, you may need to adjust Pine's configuration, as follows:

  1. From the Main Menu, press  s  for Setup and  c  for Config.

  2. In the Setup Configuration menu, locate the option "signature-file". Verify that this option is set correctly:

    • If you used Pine's signature editor to create your signature file, this option's value will either be "signature-file = <No Value Set: using ".signature">" or "signature-file = <Ignored: using literal-signature instead>". If it isn't, move your cursor to "signature-file". Press  d  to delete the value and  y  to confirm.

    • If you did not use the built-in signature editor to create your signature and the name of your signature file is not .signature, then at the "signature-file" line, press  c  to change the value and enter the name of your signature file.

  3. In both cases, when you have finished making your changes in the Setup Configuration menu, press  e  to exit and  y  to confirm your changes.
