How can I determine what version of Windows 95, 98, or Me I have?

There are numerous versions of Windows 95, 98, and Me. Follow the instructions below to determine your release version:

1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
   
   
2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
   
   
3. Double-click the System icon.
   
   
4. On the General tab, look under the name of your operating system for a number beginning with "4".

Windows 95

On the General tab, look for the number "4.00.950". If there is nothing following the number, this indicates that you have the first release of Windows 95. An "A" after the number indicates the second release. A "B" indicates the third release, or OSR2. A "C" indicates a special bonus version of Windows 95 B that also includes the Plus Pack for Windows 95. In addition, you can use the more specific version numbers, which are listed prior to the "A" or "B" identification, to find the Windows 95 release (see table below).

Windows 98

Windows 98 does not use an A, B, or C identification to distinguish between Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). Instead, Windows 98 uses the version number 4.10.1998 to indicate the first retail and OEM release of Windows 98, and 4.10.2222A to indicate Windows 98 SE.

Windows Me

There is only one release of Windows Me, which is listed in the System Properties as: Microsoft Windows Me 4.90.3000

The table below summarizes the different Windows releases and the corresponding Windows 95 or Windows 98 versions:

If you cannot get into Windows to check your version, you can check it from a DOS prompt. To do so, enter: Ver This command will provide the version number of Windows. Compare this to the version numbers listed in the table above to get the release of Windows that is currently running.

Note: Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Vista Enterprise or Ultimate are the only Windows operating systems recommended for use on the Indiana University network.
