In SPSS, how can I divide a date variable into annual quarters?

In SPSS, to divide a date variable into annual quarters, create a variable using xdate.quarter(), a built-in function that separates any SPSS date-formatted variable into quarters.

For example, suppose you have a variable, tdate, containing information in SPSS date format for the day, month, and year:

COMPUTE quart = xdate.quarter(tdate).

This command generates a new variable, quart, that has the value 1 to 4, depending on the original value of tdate.
