In Windows, how can I view a PostScript file?

To view a PostScript file in Windows, you will need to download and install a PostScript file viewer. Several viewers are readily available through the web.

RoPS

RoPS is a commercial package available in two varieties. The first offers support for level one PostScript only. The newer release offers support for level one and level two PostScript. You can download a free version with level one support, or a demo of the current full version.

GSview/Ghostscript

Ghostscript is a PostScript interpreter, and GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript; you can download both from Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview. Both are freeware, and both are installed in the Indiana University Bloomington Student Technology Centers.

Comparisons

RoPS is easier to install than the GSview/Ghostscript combination, but the free version of RoPS supports only PostScript level one. Thus it handles simple documents well, but will sometimes refuse to open more complicated documents with embedded graphics. By contrast, the GSview/Ghostscript combination is capable of also opening PostScript level two files, as well as files generated using HP drivers.

RoPS and GSview/Ghostscript are able to print the viewed file on both PostScript and non-PostScript printers.
