In SPSS, how can I conduct repeated measures MANOVA?

In SPSS, GLM and MANOVA fit repeated measures MANOVA models. GLM is supported by the point-and-click menu (click Analyze, then General Linear Model, and then Repeated Measures); MANOVA does not have a point-and-click menu, and requires syntax. MANOVA produces a messy output in text form as opposed to the table format in GLM.

Suppose two dependent variables were measured three times: x1 through x3 and y1 through y3. There are two (between-subject) factors: gender (male) and race (black). The GLM syntax for this model is:

GLM x1 x2 x3 y1 y2 y3 BY male black /WSFACTORS= dv(2) trial(3). Note: The WSFACTORS subcommand names the within-subjects factors (dv and trial) and specifies the number of levels (repetitions) for each factor.

If you prefer MANOVA, use the following syntax to obtain equivalent results:

MANOVA x1 x2 x3 y1 y2 y3 BY male(0,1) black(1,4) /WSFACTORS= dv(2) trial(3).

In MANOVA, the minimum and maximum values of each factor should be specified (e.g., the value of black ranges from 1 through 4). Many options are available for both commands, specifying various types of MANOVA. For details, see the syntax reference included in SPSS (click Help, then Command Syntax Reference).
