ARCHIVED: Where can I find information on units of measurement and how to convert between them?

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology maintains comprehensive information about standard US, British, and metric units of measurement, including tables of equivalents and a listing of the standard prefixes (such as tera-, giga-, and milli-). See the General Tables of Units of Measurement page.

For quick conversions, Google supports a variety of measurement and currency conversions directly in its search interface. For example, to convert 1 mile to feet:

  1. Open http://www.google.com/ in your web browser.

  2. Enter 1 mile in feet in the search box, and then click Google Search.

  3. The converted number should be at the top of the search results. To convert other units, simply substitute the appropriate unit (e.g., 42 deciliters in hogsheads ).
