ARCHIVED: In Microsoft Word, how do I prevent Internet references from becoming hyperlinks?

By default, whenever you type an Internet reference such as an email address or a URL, Microsoft Word converts the text into a hyperlink. To prevent Word from converting it:

Microsoft Word 2007
  1. Click the Office Button, and then select Word Options.

  2. Click Proofing.

  3. Select AutoCorrect Options... .

  4. Click the AutoFormat as you type tab.

  5. Under "Replace as you type", uncheck Internet and network paths with hyperlinks. Click OK.
Note: If the automatic hyperlinking persists, you may need to repeat steps 1-3. Then, click the AutoFormat tab, and under Replace, uncheck Internet and network paths with hyperlinks. Click OK.

Other versions of Microsoft Word

Note: Steps 4 and 5 apply only to Word for Windows.
  1. In Word, from the Tools menu, select AutoCorrect... or AutoCorrect Options... .

  2. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

  3. Under "Replace as you type", uncheck Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.

  4. Select the AutoFormat tab.

  5. Under "Replace", uncheck Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.

  6. Click OK.
