In my browser, how do I download an inline or background image from a web page?

An inline image appears alongside text in a web page, while a background image usually appears in a tiled pattern behind the text. Both kinds of image can be in either JPEG or GIF format. You can use Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari to download an inline or background image, according to the appropriate steps below.

On this page:

Internet Explorer

To download an inline image:

  1. Right-click the image you want to download, and then click Save Picture As... .

  2. Choose the location to which you would like to save the image and click Save.

To download a background image, right-click the background image you want to download and click Save Background As... . A Save Picture dialog box will appear, allowing you to select the directory in which you want to save the image.

Firefox

To download an inline image:

  1. Right-click the image you want to download, and choose Save Image As... .

  2. Choose the location to which you would like to save the image, and then click Save.

To download a background image, right-click the background image you want to download. Click View Background Image, and then follow the instructions for downloading an inline image.

Safari

To download an inline image, click and drag the image to the desktop or a document in another application. You can also Ctrl-click the image and select either Save Image As... or Copy Image to Clipboard.

To download a background image, Ctrl-click or right-click the image and, from the menu that appears, select View Source or View Frame Source. Find the URL for the background image in the document's <body> tag (it should be near the top). Open that URL and then download the image as described above for inline images in Safari.
