If I am calling long distance with a calling card or a credit card, how do I dial into the modem pools?
If you wish to use a calling card or credit card to dial into the Indiana University modem pools, you must still dial the phone number exactly as you would for any long distance call. The phone numbers are:
| IUB two-hour modem pool: | 812-856-5200 |
| IUB eight-hour modem pool: | 812-856-5202 |
| IUPUI four-hour modem pool: | 317-278-5620 |
In the phone number section of your communications software, you must enter the phone number exactly as you would to place a regular long distance call.
In many cases, a modem will dial faster than the phone company equipment can register. In these cases you will need to use a comma in each place that you need a pause, such as after the area code or after the code used to disable call waiting. The placement of commas and use of codes will vary from place to place. You may have to experiment with these settings. It may help to actually make a regular telephone call to the modem dial-up number and take note of where you're pausing and what numbers you must enter to get there.
If you're using a calling card or credit card, you must enter the card's access code.
For example, for a typical credit card call from outside of the 812 area code but still in the US, you would enter this in the phone number section: 10,8128565200,,12345678901234560306 The 1 denotes a long distance call. The 0 denotes an operator assisted call. The comma allows the phone company's equipment to catch up to your modem. The next section is the phone number; the two commas allow enough time for the electronic operator to arrive. The last number is either the calling card number or credit card number. If a credit card number, the 4-digit card expiration date will follow; in this example it is March 2006 (0306).
If you're outside of the United States, you must dial the appropriate country code before the area code.
