Can I access Webserve from outside the Indiana University network?

For security reasons, all connections to Webserve from outside the Indiana University network require a VPN connection. If you attempt a non-VPN connection from a non-IU ISP (e.g., AOL, Kiva, Blue Marble), you will be denied access. For more information, see the IU Webmaster's Accessing Webserve from Outside the Indiana University Network page.

An alternative to using the VPN is to first connect to your Quarry account using a secure client (e.g., SSH or SSH2), and then use SSH2 or SFTP to connect to Webserve from Quarry. To do so, at the Quarry command line, enter:

ssh -l accountname webserve.iu.edu

Replace accountname with the name of your Webserve account.

Note: If you wish to make an SSH connection to Webserve, you must use SSH2, which is a more secure, efficient, and portable version of SSH that includes SFTP. At IU, UITS has upgraded most central systems from SSH to SSH2.

IU students, faculty, and staff can download secure shell clients from IUware Online at:

http://iuware.indiana.edu/

Note: SSH Secure Shell Client for Windows is no longer available for download from IUware or the SSH Communications Security web site. For alternative SSH and SFTP clients, see At IU, what SSH/SFTP clients are supported and where can I get them?

For information on making an SSH connection from one Unix account to another, see From a Unix account, how do I connect to another shared computer?
