ARCHIVED: What is IPX?

IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) is a networking protocol from Novell that interconnects networks using Novell's NetWare servers and clients. A datagram, or packet protocol, IPX works at the network layer of communication protocols and is connectionless (i.e., it doesn't require that a connection be set up before packets are sent to a destination as, for example, a regular voice phone call does).

Note: AppleTalk and IPX routing are not available on the Indiana University network. Instead of these protocols, use TCP/IP. For more information, see ARCHIVED: At IU, how does the removal of AppleTalk routing from the network affect me?
