ARCHIVED: In Emacs, how can I edit remote files using FTP?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

In Emacs, to edit remote files using FTP, do the following:

  1. Press C-x C-f.
  2. Delete all text after the Find file: prompt.
  3. Enter a filename with the following format:
      //username@host:filename
  4. Enter the account password.

Emacs might bring up a help menu when you try to delete all of the text after the Find file: prompt. This usually means there is a problem with the configuration of your communications software. Often, communications software is configured so that the Backspace key sends a Ctrl-h character; Emacs normally interprets this as the command for requesting help.

If the help menu comes up, press q to exit the Emacs help, and continue with the instructions using the Delete key instead.

For instructions on changing the behavior of the Backspace key in your communications software, see If your keyboard's Backspace key doesn't work properly on a UITS shared central system

Note:
For file transfers to and from UITS systems at Indiana University, you must use an SFTP client.

At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see Get help for Linux or Unix at IU.
