What is a MOD file?

Originally for Amiga computers, MOD files are music files with characteristics similar to both MIDI files and WAV files. They contain both a set of digitized instrument samples and a song that uses them. The MOD file format is rarely used anymore, and has largely been replaced by formats such as MP3 and WAV, which are nearly universally supported.
