Using Microsoft Outlook Web Access, how do I create and manage folders?
You can create and manage folders in the Microsoft Outlook web client, called Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA). OWA should look similar to your desktop client, with the exception of the web browser toolbars at the top and bottom of the window. On the left are the Outlook Bar icons, and along the top (beneath your browser's toolbar) is the OWA toolbar. For more, see In Outlook Web Access at IU, what are the buttons and icons in the toolbar?
Note: Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a secure site with two distinct interfaces, depending on which web browser you use. UITS highly recommends the Premium interface (available through Internet Explorer in Windows) over the Light interface (available through all other browsers or operating systems) for the optimal OWA experience. For more information, see In Outlook Web Access (OWA), what are the "Premium" and "Light" interfaces?
Preparing the position of your new folder
Before creating a new folder, browse to the appropriate location:
- To create a new folder in your Inbox, navigate to your Inbox by
clicking
Inboxon the left side of the screen.
Note: When OWA opens, it opens your Inbox by default.
- To create a folder at the same level as your Inbox (i.e., the new
folder will show up in the folder list with the Inbox), from the
folder list frame to the left of the message frame, above "Inbox",
click the folder icon. You should then see a list of folders, one of
which will be
Inbox.
- To create a new folder within an existing folder, from the folders list frame, click the desired folder. This will place you in that folder.
Creating the new folder
- Once you're in the location where you want to create your new
folder, from the OWA toolbar, click the icon for
Create a new folder. This will open a JavaScript box in which to name your new folder.
- Enter a name for your new folder in the text field, and then click
OK. The screen will refresh and you will see your new folder in the folders list frame. You can then click that folder to access it.
Deleting a folder
- Make sure that the messages in the folder are ready to be
deleted. Then, from the folders list frame, click the folder that you
wish to delete.
- From OWA toolbar, click the icon for
Delete the current folder. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete the folder. Respond by clicking the appropriate button.
