ARCHIVED: At IU, using Netscape 4.5 through 4.7.x, how do I read my Exchange mail using IMAP?

Note: The software discussed here is no longer in common use at IU, and UITS may no longer be able to verify this text's accuracy; additionally, the UITS Support Center may no longer have the materials needed to adequately support this software.

Netscape Messenger is a mail program that comes with Netscape Communicator. To configure Messenger in Netscape 4.5 through 4.7.x to read your Exchange email at Indiana University, follow the steps below:

  1. In Netscape Messenger, from the Edit menu, select Preferences. In the left column, expand the Mail & Newsgroups folder by clicking the + (plus sign) (for Mac OS, click the triangle).

  2. Click Identity. In the "Identity" preferences that appear on the right, enter your name and email address in the appropriate fields.

If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?

  3. In the column on the left, select Mail Servers. In the "Incoming Mail Servers" section on the right, click Add... , then do the following:

    1. For "Server Name:", enter imap.exchange.iu.edu .
    2. For "Server Type:", choose IMAP.
    3. For "Username:", enter your username.

  4. Click the IMAP tab and select Use secure connection (SSL).

  5. In the "When I delete a message:" section, choose the method that is best for you.

  6. Select the Advanced tab, and leave "IMAP server directory:" (in Mac OS, "IMAP directory path:") blank. Check Show only subscribed folders.

  7. In the section labeled "These preferences specify the namespaces on your IMAP server", make sure the checkbox next to Allow server to override these namespaces is selected, and everything else is blank. Click OK.

  8. In the Preferences window, under "Mail Servers", locate the "Outgoing Mail Server" section.

  9. In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:

    mail-relay.iu.edu
  10. For "Outgoing mail server user name:", leave the default setting.

  11. For "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages:", select Always. Click OK to return to Netscape.

To open Messenger from Netscape Communicator, from the Communicator menu, select Messenger. You should see your Exchange server listed in your folder list, with its own Inbox.

Note: The IU SMTP server requires authentication to send mail. Because there is no setting for this in Netscape Messenger 4.5 through 4.7.x, whenever you send mail you will see the No User Certificate - Netscape window, which contains the following message:

"The site 'mail-relay.iu.edu' has requested client authentication, but you do not have a Personal Certificate to authenticate yourself. The site may choose not to give you access without one."

Click OK to close the window. Messenger will prompt you to enter your username and password. Once you do, your mail message will be sent.
