ARCHIVED: In a Word document, how do I insert a file from another application?

Note: Inserting a document is not the same as linking and embedding. Linking and embedding creates a dynamic link between the documents so that changes made to the inserted file are automatically updated in the Word document. Inserting only pastes the file's current information into your Word document; the file will not be updated automatically.

Word 2010 or 2007

To insert a file from another application into a document:

  1. Open the Word document into which you want to insert the file.

  2. Place the cursor where you want to add the file.

  3. Locate the file you want to insert by searching for it in My Computer.

  4. Click and hold the mouse button down, drag the file to the location in the Word document where you want to insert it, and then release the mouse button.

Note: This may place an icon to the file in the Word document; double-click the icon to open the file.

Earlier versions of Word

To insert a file from another application into a document:

  1. Open the Word document into which you want to insert the file.
