At IU, in Outlook Express for Windows, how do I read my Exchange mail using IMAP?
If you do not want to use Outlook or Outlook Web Access (OWA), you can use IMAP with Outlook Express to read your Exchange email.
Setting up Outlook Express
If you've never used Outlook Express for email, the Internet Connection Wizard should start the first time you launch Outlook Express. If you've already configured your account and wish to reconfigure or add another account (or if the Internet Connection Wizard fails to start), follow the directions below to manually start the Internet Connection Wizard, which will walk you through setting up your account.
Manually starting the Internet Connection Wizard
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectAccounts....
- Click the
Addbutton, and selectMail.... Account setup will begin.
Configuring Outlook Express with the Internet Connection Wizard
- Follow the prompts to enter your name and email address, clicking
Nextafter each entry.If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- In the "My incoming mail server is" section, select
IMAP.
- For "Incoming mail server:", enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu.

In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:
mail-relay.iu.edu - Click
Nextto proceed to the mail login information.
- For "Account name:", enter your username.
- In the "Password:" field, if you are the only one who uses your
computer, enter your password. If you share your computer, do not
enter your password, and uncheck the box next to
Remember password. ClickNext.
Note: Do not chooseLog on using Secure Password Authentication.
- In Outlook Express 4 (but not 5 or 6), it will also prompt you
for:
- "Friendly name:" Enter something you associate with the server and
account (e.g.,
Work EmailorMy Exchange Account). - "Connection type:"
- If you wish to dial in automatically when you start Outlook
Express, choose
Connect using my phone line. - If you usually connect with Dial-up Networking or the
communications software available from IUware before you
start Outlook Express, choose
I will establish my Internet connection manually. - If your computer has a direct Ethernet connection,
choose
LAN.
Note: Outlook Express will be much slower if you are accessing your mail over a dial-up connection.
- If you wish to dial in automatically when you start Outlook
Express, choose
- "Friendly name:" Enter something you associate with the server and
account (e.g.,
- Click
Finish, and then clickClose. If you are prompted to download the folder list for the IMAP account, clickNo.
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectAccounts.... Click theMailtab, and highlight the account you just created.
- Click the
Propertiesbutton.
- Click the
Generaltab. Under "Mail Account", enter a name such asWork EmailorMy Exchange Account.
- Click the
Serverstab, and, under the "Outgoing Mail Server" section, make sure the checkbox forMy server requires authenticationis selected.
- Click the
IMAPtab. To avoid error messages when sending mail, uncheck the box next toStore special folders on IMAP server.
- Click the
Advancedtab, and under both the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" and "Incoming mail (IMAP)" sections, make sure that the checkboxes forThis server requires a secure connection (SSL)are selected.
- Click
Apply, thenOK, and thenClose.
To check your mail, find your mail account in the list of servers and folders on the left. When it asks you to download folders, allow it.
