In Microsoft Word, how do I convert footnotes to endnotes or vice versa?

Word 2007

To convert one or more footnotes or endnotes:

  1. Open the document, and select the References tab.

  2. In the Footnotes group, click Show Notes.

  3. Select the notes you want to convert, and then right-click. Select Convert to Footnote or Convert to Endnote.

  4. Click Close.

To convert all footnotes or endnotes:

  1. Open the document, and select the References tab.

  2. Click the Footnote & Endnote Dialog Box launcher (it appears as a small square in the bottom-right corner of the tab).

  3. Click Convert... .

  4. Click OK and then Close.

Word 2002 and 2003

Note: Some of the menu options mentioned below will not appear if you seldom use them. To find them, click the arrows at the bottom of the menu. For more, see In Office 2003 and 2007, what are personalized menus and personalized toolbars, and how do I turn them off and on?

To convert one or more footnotes or endnotes:

  1. Open the document and, from the View menu, choose Normal.

  2. From the View menu, select Footnotes. If the document has both footnotes and endnotes, a message will appear. Click View footnote area or View endnote area, and then click OK.

  3. In the "Note" pane, click All Footnotes or All Endnotes.

  4. Select the notes you want to convert, and then right-click. Select Convert to Footnote or Convert to Endnote.

  5. Click Close.

To convert all footnotes or endnotes:

  1. Open the document and, from the View menu, choose Normal.

  2. From the Insert menu, select Reference and choose Footnote... .

  3. Click Convert... .

  4. Select the desired option, and click OK and then Close.

Word 97, 2000, 2004, and 2008

  1. With your document open, from the Insert menu, select Footnote... .

  2. Click Options... , and then click Convert... .

  3. Select the radio button next to one of the following options:

    • Convert all footnotes to endnotes
    • Convert all endnotes to footnotes
    • Swap footnotes and endnotes

  4. Click OK in each of the dialog boxes.
