In Oncourse CL, why don't I appear in the roster of a class for which I'm registered?

If you can enter your course in Oncourse CL, but can't see yourself in the roster, your identity may be hidden under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA ensures that students have the right to conceal their names from other class participants.

Note: If you are unable to see or enter your course in Oncourse CL, you may not be registered correctly for the course, or there may be another problem such as a mismatch between your registrar information and computing accounts information. The best first step is to verify that you're registered for your course, that your Indiana University ID number is correct, and that your bursar bills are paid. Next, contact your campus Support Center and make sure that you have a Network ID username and ADS domain account.

At IU Bloomington, the registrars have elected to hide students from other students in every course by default. Students have the option to be listed or hidden using the Privacy Status tool in Oncourse CL.

On other campuses, students who have made special arrangements with their registrars to invoke FERPA rights are not visible to other students in Oncourse CL. Other students can change from listed to hidden (or vice versa) by modifying Privacy Status in Oncourse CL.

Note: For newly combined course sections in Oncourse CL, the initial privacy status for instructors and all students is brought forward from the original course section. If the initial privacy status is set to hidden, instructors will be able to see their students, but students will not see their instructors or other students. See Changing your privacy status.

For more about Privacy Status in Oncourse CL, see Changing your privacy status.

Note: The faculty of record can see all the students in the roster. FERPA ensures that students can remain hidden only from other students. If faculty can't see you in the roster, contact your campus Support Center.

More information on FERPA is available from the US Department of Education.
