In Windows, how can I connect several computers to the web using one modem?

At Indiana University, it is not possible to connect several computers to the web using one modem, because the methods described below violate IU policy. For specifics, see the policy on Extending the University Data Network, available from the University Information Policy Office.

Internet Connection Sharing

In Windows 98SE, Me, and 2000, you can connect several computers to the web using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). It allows several computers to share a modem connection. Unfortunately, ICS requires sharing a single Internet service provider (ISP) account. At IU, that means sharing a single Network ID, which IU policy forbids.

If UITS becomes aware of a way to configure ICS to allow users to use their own Network ID to log into the IU modem pool, such use of ICS would not violate IU policy, and UITS will publish it in the Knowledge Base.

Proxy server

Another method is to install proxy server software on the computer that dials into the modem pool. It and the other computers must be networked together using Ethernet. On the other computers, you must set up their browsers to connect to the proxy server. However, use of a proxy server to extend the IU network is also against IU policy.
