In Internet Explorer, how do I turn Java or JavaScript off or on?

To enable or disable Java or JavaScript in Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8, follow the appropriate instructions below.

Internet Explorer 7 or 8

To enable or disable Java:

  1. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down in the upper right, select Internet Options... .

  2. Click the Programs tab, and then click Manage Add-ons.

  3. Highlight Java Plug-in.

  4. Click Disable (located under "Settings" in version 7).

  5. Click OK twice.

To enable or disable JavaScript:

  1. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down in the upper right, choose Internet Options... .

  2. Click the Security tab.

  3. Click Custom Level... .

  4. Scroll to the "Scripting" section of the list. Click Disable or Enable.

  5. Close and restart your browser.

Internet Explorer 6

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options... .

  2. Click the Security tab.

  3. Click Custom Level... .

    • Java: Scroll to the "Java" section (under "Java VM", under "Java permissions"). To disable Java, click Disable Java. To re-enable Java, click a different setting, such as High Safety or Medium Safety.

    • JavaScript: Scroll to the "Active scripting" section of the list (under "Scripting") Click Disable or Enable.

  4. Close and restart your browser.
