Can I access an NTFS partition without booting Windows 2000 or XP?

In Windows 2000 and XP, the Repair Command Console allows you to access an NTFS partition without booting Windows.

The Command Console permits various tasks including reading and writing files, starting and stopping services, formatting partitions and drives, and repairing the Master Boot Record.

To load the console, boot either from the three boot floppy disks or from the Windows CD. When the welcome screen appears, press the F10 key. Administrators can also choose Repair Command Console from the Repair options, or can add it to the boot menu by using winnt32.exe /cmdcons .

For more information, see articles 229716 and 314058 at the Microsoft Help and Support web site.

Search Microsoft Help and Support.

Note: Some Linux distributions will allow read-only access to NTFS partitions.
