Can I access an NTFS partition without booting Windows?
In Windows XP, the Repair Command Console allows you to access an NTFS partition without booting Windows. The Command Console permits various tasks including reading and writing files, starting and stopping services, formatting partitions and drives, and repairing the Master Boot Record.
To load the console:
Windows 7 and Vista
- Boot from the Windows CD, and click
Nextat the welcome screen. Then selectRepair your computer. - Select the operating system you want to repair, and click
Next. - From the menu options, select
Command Prompt.
Windows XP
- Boot either from the three boot floppy disks or from the Windows CD.
- When the welcome screen appears, press the
Rkey. Administrators can also chooseRepair Command Consolefrom theRepairoptions, or can add it to the boot menu by usingwinnt32.exe /cmdcons.
Note: The Recovery Console in Windows XP contains a more advanced set of tools which can be used to repair a corrupt installation of Windows. Incorrect use of these tools could render the computer inoperable, so inexperienced users should seek support before attempting this on their own.

Note: Some Linux distributions will allow read-only access to NTFS partitions.
