ARCHIVED: In Oncourse, why was I suddenly disconnected?
UITS no longer supports original Oncourse. Oncourse CL is Indiana University's current online course environment.
Unless you are actively using it, the Oncourse server will disconnect your session after two hours.
You can be disconnected if you spend an hour simply reading messages in a chat room or composing a Course Mail message. Until you enter a message or select a new link, the server considers your connection inactive. Therefore, if you are creating a large document for use in Oncourse, to avoid the possibility of being disconnected due to inactivity, first compose it offline and then copy and paste it into Oncourse.
Five minutes before you are disconnected, you will see a message box containing a warning that you will soon be disconnected. Click this box to reset the timer for another two hours. You must have Java enabled for this to work; see the Knowledge Base document In Internet Explorer, how do I turn Java or JavaScript off or on? or In Firefox, how do I turn Java and JavaScript off or on?
Note: If you're taking a test and the instructor has set a time limit for the test that is longer than the standard timeout, that longer period will override the standard timeout.
