In Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect, how do I open and save a web page?

Note: Neither Word nor WordPerfect were designed to be web page editors. Both programs can open and edit basic web pages, but modifications made with these programs can have unforeseen results. In some situations with complex web pages, these programs might not even be able to open the page for editing. For information about specialized web page editing and design tools, see For HTML, what editing software is available?

To open and save a web page in Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect, follow the appropriate steps below.

On this page:

  1. From the Office Button menu, select Open... .

  2. In the Open window, in the "File name:" field, type the web site's URL, for example: http://www.some.address.com/site.html
  3. Click Open to load the page and download all the images into Word.

Note: The file will be opened in Read Only mode. You will need to save the file before you modify it. To save the file, from the Office Button menu, select Save As... . Give the file a name, and then click Save.

Word 2008 and 2004 for Mac OS X

Note: In Word 2008 and 2004, you cannot open a web page using the site's URL. However, you can open a web page that is saved to your computer. To do so, in your web browser, navigate to the desired web page. From the File menu in your web browser, click Save as... . Once the web page is saved to your computer, open Word and follow the directions below.
  1. From the File menu, select Open... .

  2. From the pull-down menu next to "Enable", select All Documents.

  3. Navigate to the web page you want to open, and then click Open.

Word 98 and 2001 for Mac OS and v.X for Mac OS X

  1. From the File menu, select Open Web Page... .

  2. In the Open Web Page box, type the web site's URL, for example: http://www.some.address.com/site.html
  3. Click OK. It will open the page, and then download all the images into Word.

Note: The file will be opened in Read Only mode. You will need to save the file before you modify it. To save the file, from the File menu, select Save As... . Give the file a name, and then click Save.

WordPerfect for Windows

  1. From the File menu, select Open.

  2. In the Open File window, in the "File name" field, type the web site's URL, for example: http://www.some.address.com/site.html
  3. Click Open.

  4. It will then ask if you want to download the images and any sound files that are included in the web page. Depending on your version of WordPerfect, select Yes and then specify the location to save the file, or put a check in the box and select the location to save the file. (A default location will be filled in for you.)

To save the file to your hard drive, from the File menu, select Save As. Under "File Name", type a new name for the file, and make sure the "File Type" is set correctly.

Note: If you select Save rather than Save As, you will be asked for a username and password, and WordPerfect will try to write a copy to the web site itself.
