In Windows, how can I tell what modem I have?
You may have many drivers installed on your computer, but the drivers do not indicate which modem you have. To determine which modem you have, follow the appropriate steps below for your operating system. The results will look something like the following:
"Sportster 33600 v6.0"
This result means that your computer detected a U.S. Robotics Sportster 33.6Kbps external modem. It also indicates that this modem uses version 6.0 of the device driver used to operate the modem.
Windows 2000 and XP
- In Windows XP default view, select
Start, thenControl Panel. In XP Classic View or Windows 2000, selectStart, thenSettings, and thenControl Panel.
- In XP Classic View or Windows 2000, double-click the
Phone and Modemicon. If you are not in Classic View, clickSwitch to Classic Viewon the top of the left pane.
- Click the
Modemstab. You will see a list of all modems currently installed on your computer.
- Highlight the modem for which you would like additional
information and click the
Propertiesbutton.
- In the
Propertieswindow, click theDiagnosticstab. In the next window, clickQuery Modem.
- Once the modem responds, you will see a list of different
ATcommands. (These are commands used by the computer to communicate with the modem.) Scroll down until you see "AT I3". Your modem type is displayed to the right of "AT I3".
Windows 95, 98, or Me
In Windows 95, 98, or Me, you can view your modem type in the Control Panel. Follow the steps below:
- Click the
Startbutton and selectSettings, thenControl Panel.
- Double-click the
Modemsicon. TheModemswindow will appear.
- Click the
Diagnosticstab.
- You should see a listing of your COM ports, for example:
COM 1 no modem installed
COM 2 USR 56k
If the COM port of your modem is not highlighted, select it.
- Click the
More Infobutton. Your modem type is displayed to the right of "AT I3".
Windows 3.1 or NT 4.0
Use HyperTerminal or ProComm to determine what modem you have. If you have an external modem, be sure it is turned on. Enter the following terminal command when you start the program:
