In Windows 2000 and XP, how can I add a shortcut for my Control Panel to the Start menu?

To add a Control Panel shortcut to your Start menu in Windows 2000 and XP:

  1. Right-click the Start button and click Explore.

  2. An Exploring-Start Menu window will open. Within the right panel, right-click in the empty space. A pop-up menu will appear. Select New, and then Folder.

  3. In the right panel of the Exploring-Start Menu window, you will see a new folder. In Windows XP, replace the line "New Folder" with the following: .{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

    In Windows 2000, replace the line "New Folder" with the following:

    Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
  4. Press Enter.

You will now find a Control Panel shortcut in your Start menu. When you select Control Panel, a submenu will appear with a list of the items in your Control Panel. Following the instructions above, you may add other useful folders, using the text strings indicated below:

Printers.{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} History.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}

In Windows XP, you do not need to include the text before the dot.

Note: You can add a History shortcut only if you have Internet Explorer 5.0 or later installed on your computer.
