In an IU STC or RTC, how do I launch an application?

At Indiana University, UITS maintains Windows Vista and Mac OS X Student Technology Centers (STCs) for use by students, faculty, and staff. Campus housing residents may also use the UITS Residential Technology Centers (RTCs). In either setting, log in with your IU Network ID. If you do not have one, see How do I get my first computing accounts at IU?

Once you're logged in, follow the steps below for the operating system you're using.

Windows 7

  1. In the lower left corner of the screen, click Start; from the menu that appears, select All Programs.

  2. Another menu will appear that lists various types of software. Select the type you are interested in (e.g., Word Processing). To launch a web browser, select Communications.

  3. From the next menu, select the name of the application you would like to launch (e.g., Microsoft Word, Mozilla Firefox). In some cases, you may need to first select another subcategory of software, and then select the name of the program.

Mac OS X

In a Mac OS X STC or RTC, application aliases are kept in folders in the Dock (the row of icons along the bottom of the screen):

  1. Mouse over each folder icon in the Dock to reveal the name of each folder (e.g., Communications, Web Browsers, Graphics/Design). To open a folder, click its icon.

  2. Inside the folder, to launch an application, double-click its icon.

Alternatively, you can click and hold (i.e., don't release the mouse button) each folder icon to reveal a list of the applications inside. To launch an application, click its name.
