On the IUB campus housing network, can my computer have a static IP address?
If your computer is configured to use a static IP address for Ethernet, you will not be able to register your computer for use in Indiana University Bloomington campus housing. You need to remove the static IP address.
It's not uncommon for computer companies to ship a computer with a static IP address that was used to set up the system before it was shipped. Specifically, many new Hewlett-Packard computers have a static IP address.
The Get Connected software automatically configures TCP/IP to use DHCP to obtain an IP address. However, if you need to set up your computer manually, you must configure TCP/IP to obtain an IP address using DHCP. (If you think you'll need the static IP address that was assigned to your computer, write it down before configuring your computer to use DHCP.)
For more information about configuring your computer manually, see the following:
- For Windows, see In Windows, how do I configure my computer to obtain an IP address automatically?
- For Mac OS X, see At IUB or IUPUI, in Mac OS X, how can I manually configure my computer to connect to the network?
- For information about registering your computer for IU network
access, see At IUB and IUPUI, how do I register my computer?
Note: You can use the Get Connected web site to register your Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Mac OS X (10.3 and later) computer to use the Indiana University network in campus housing. Computers running Windows 2000 or Linux, as well as game consoles, must be manually registered. For help, contact the UITS Support Center. You cannot register earlier versions of Windows on the IU network in campus housing.
If your computer still cannot access the network, contact the campus Support Center.
