In Microsoft Outlook 2000 and newer, how can I convert my Personal Address Book to my Contacts folder on the Exchange server?

Note: While you can no longer create new Personal Address Books (.pab files) in Outlook 2007, you can add the names and addresses from old .pab files to the Outlook Address Book by importing the old files and converting them to Contact folders, which you can display in the Outlook Address Book.

Note: UITS recommends that you use the Outlook address book (which is created automatically from information in your Contacts folder) instead of a Personal Address Book. The contacts will be located on the server and accessible from any Outlook client as well as Outlook Web Access, whereas a Personal Address Book is only available from the hard drive of the computer on which you create it.

In Outlook 2000, 2002, and 2003, you can convert your Personal Address Book (which is kept locally on your hard drive) to your Contacts folder on the Exchange server as follows:

  1. From the File menu, select Import and Export.

  2. You will see a window that says "Choose an action to perform". From this list, click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.

  3. In the next window, select Personal Address Book from the list, and then click Next.

  4. In the next window, you will see a list of folders on your Exchange account and personal folders. Click the folder that says Contacts and then click Next.

  5. In the next window, follow the directions. Click Finish.
