For IUB email, if I use Comcast to connect to the Internet via cable modem, what should I use as my outgoing mail server?
Note: If you send mail using only IU Webmail or Outlook Web Access, or if you use Microsoft Outlook to connect directly (i.e., not using the IMAP protocol) to your Indiana University Exchange account, you do not need to specify this server.
If you use your Comcast connection to access your Indiana University email account with an IMAP client, use the following as your SMTP (outgoing) mail server:
-
mail-relay.iu.edu(IU's SMTP server)
You can use IU's mail relay from off campus due to the authentication requirement on the mail relay. You don't even need a VPN connection. Most mail servers do not allow users to connect to them from anywhere outside their network. However, since IU's mail relay has been configured for higher security (SSL) and to require a username and password, it has also been configured to allow connections from outside the IU network.
For more information on the effect of the mail relay settings, see At IU, if I use an outside ISP, what should I know about my outgoing mail server?
For more information on how to configure your email client, refer to Reading your Exchange mail using a desktop client or Reading your Cyrus mail using a desktop client. If you'd like to change the SMTP server setting on an existing configuration, see Instructions for changing mail settings to meet UITS requirements.
